However, the pathophysiology of FOG has been poorly understood. We report two cases, one case is a 26-year old man and the second case is a 65-year old man, who showed FOG following hypoxic brain injuries caused by sudden cardiac arrest and hypovolemic shock, respectively. Brain F-18 FDG-PET images demonstrated the diffuse cortical hypometabolism in case 1 patient, and the decreased metabolism of the subcortical structures in case 2 patient. Two patients showed the typical features of FOG (turning, destination, and tight quarter hesitations combined with kinesia paradoxa) and the abnormal patterns of temporospatial data in kinematic gait analysis. We present two cases of FOG following hypoxic brain injury with reviewing of some literatures.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Freezing of Gait in Patients After Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury

The objective of this study was to investigate spatiotemporal characteristics with gait variability in patients with freezing of gait (FOG) after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI).Eleven patients showing FOG after HIBI and 15 normal controls were consecutively enrolled. We performed gait analysis using a computerized gait system (VICON MX-T10 Motion Analysis System) and compared spatiotempor...

Brain metabolism in patients with freezing of gait after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury

Movement disorders are 1 of the long-term neurological complications that can occur after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI). However, freezing of gait (FOG) after HIBI is rare. The aim of this study was to examine the brain metabolism of patients with FOG after HIBI using F-18 fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (F-18 FDG PET).We consecutively enrolled 11 patients with FOG ...

Effect of a Training Protocol on Gait Parameters in Men with CVA

Background: Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA) refers to any kind of damage caused by direct or indirect damage to the brain and its related elements. About 60% of brain injury victims have a permanent disorder. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a 12-week selected training protocol on men walking following brain injury. Methods: In a semi-experimental study, 30 male subje...

ارتباط تغییرات آهن مایع مغزی نخاعی با آسیب مغز متعاقب ضربه مغزی در رت

Introduction: In Iran, thousands of young individuals become victims of head injury annually. Head injury can damage neuronal cells which may in turn complicate the recovery of the patients. Also, the increase of iron in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) following head injury may contribute to the hypoxic-ischemia brain damage by catalyzing the formation of free radicals (Harber-Weiss Rection). The obj...

Pedunculopontine nucleus deep brain stimulation produces sustained improvement in primary progressive freezing of gait.

OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of bilateral pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for primary progressive freezing of gait (PPFG). METHODS A patient with PPFG underwent bilateral PPN-DBS and was followed clinically for over 14 months. RESULTS The PPFG patient exhibited a robust improvement in gait and posture following PPN-DBS. When PPN stimulation was...
